G1 Powermasters Optimus Prime and Doubledealer
With this set, we're well on our way to having our biggest year of Transformers galleries, beating out 2014 which was our biggest year to date!
Up first? Powermaster Optimus Prime and his Powermaster Partner Hi-Q. This was a rebirth of Optimus after he died a horrible death at the hands of his eternal enemy Megatron in Transformers The Movie in 1986, and what a rebirth it is! Not only do you get the usual Optimus cab and trailer combo, but instead of a battle platform springing to life like his original trailer, you get a fully armed battle station! And Hi-Q gets to join in on the fun as he can interact with the weapons while Prime mans the main station. The best, however, was still to come because you could now combine Optimus with his trailer to form the biggest, baddest Optimus the US had ever seen... Powermaster Optimus Prime and he rocked it hardcore!
And would you take a look at that price tag from 1988? *sighs*
Last, but certainly not least, is Doubledealer! This double agent could change from Autobot robot to Decepticon buzzard to a missile carrier truck and back! But, much like Optimus, he could only do so with a little help from his friends Knok and Skar! With a shoulder mounted cannon and rifle formed out of the missile he's carrying, this walking weapon of mass destruction was just as deadly as he was two faced...literally!
Take a trip down memory lane with us and check out their galleries below and when you're done, come to forums and share your thoughts, memories and experiences with these two blasts from the past!

G1 1988 Hi-Q

And that Doubledealer. The bird missilie gets me every time. Yeah.

Doubledealer was a fun figure too. My preferred mode for him was the Decepticon bird mode. Is one reason I don't much care for the Generations figure (apart from the issues already common with the Blitzwing mold). Also I liked the lil bat powermaster engine. Was a nice change to get an animal 'master companion.

Only 3 left! I've had all of these Powermaster galleries finished since before SDCC last year. It was my big gallery push that I did right before SDCC so that I'd have something new to work on for Seibertron.com on the plane and during my travels for SDCC 2014. Unfortunately, that never happened and those galleries, like so many others, just sat on my computer unfinished. Now that I knocked out Doubledealer and Powermaster Optimus Prime, hopefully I can get to the Autobot Powermasters next week during my travels for SDCC 2015.

That would be supersweet.
Is there any way you can compare them to their Masterforce versions? In particular the Ranger/Joyride comparison.

Not yet ... don't have Ranger yet or Doubleclouder. One day!

The Powermaster partners serve as an external power source to give a power boost to the Transformer they are bonded with. Powermasters need their nebulon partners in order to unlock their transformation.

Knowing Getaway only from MtMtE, I'd have never guessed he had a little guy that turned into his engine block.
Or that he had an engine block to begin with.

Always thought Hasbro shot themselves in the foot a little by using the Macross figure for Jetfire cos once I had that and it's excellent articulation, pretty much every Transformer following it just felt basic as all hell. But I still got them anyways.

1988 was really when the toys in Japan and the Unites States really started to separate. It would be cool to see comparison photos with their Japanese counterparts Lightfoot, Ranger, and Roadking.

At the very least, Lightfoot and Road King seem identical to Getaway and Slapdash.o.supreme wrote:Nice pictures!

The head sticker and chest stickers are different, and the shade of yellow is different (at least on the ones I photographed). I think the Micro Change version was a lighter shade of yellow and the Transformers one was a more standard yellow, but it's really hard to tell in my pictures which one was the lighter shade.
I sold the Micro Change one and I'd still like to replace at least the chest on my Bumblejumper because of the scratch through the Autobot sticker. Other than that flaw, it's a really nice Bumblejumper.

I think I dimly remember the cars from my early childhood, but without realizing they could transform. I dunno, maybe I'm confusing them with Hot Wheels or something...

Or Penny Racers. Which they essentially are, Penny Racers what can turn into robots.

Jump back into the pool of funky decos with the two jets from the 90s, Starscream in his traditional white and red, with some thrown in purple, while Ramjet sports a completely inverted purple, teal, and black scheme! Both sharing the same mold, you can find their full galleries by clicking on any of the images below.

Ramjet's G2 colors are amazing. I'm glad Slipstream adopted them (more or less), since they probably would remain incredibly obscure otherwise.

More like paint app technology not being quite there yet to the level of today. They were released in 1992 you know? Stickers were phased out right before Beast Wars in 1995.

And Hb and TT still didn't implement it for the Seekers, whether it be TFC, Encore or the recent Seeker set. Kind of sad and frickin frustrating to attach....that's why we love the old bricks!

I'm about to start using Scourge and Cyclonus (technically, Bombshell is probably Cyclonus but Skywarp has an identical body) as my backup two seekers. I ordered a few things online recently to makeup for some gaps in my collection.
It depends on when you choose to place G2. Some of the manga places parts of it (the new characters) pre-movie. Marvel pretty much diverges from the path towards the movie events. The toy bios and Wings Universe lean towards it being post-Rebirth but keeps Galvatron, Scourge, and Cyclonus around.
If I could design them from scratch, I would lean towards a G2 Skywarp and Thundercracker that at least take cues from Scourge and Cyclonus.
Another source of inspiration might be Machine Wars Skywarp, which has a G2 insignia and was intended as G2. And you might as well take inspiration from MW Thundercracker too then.
If you just want to go for wacky fan in-joke abominations, a white, yellow, and black Cyclonus with G2 style decals as Skywarp and a camo (or Action Master TC deco) Scourge as Thundercracker would bridge the gap.
Something-something about Forestonite causing Scourge/Cyclonus/Armada/Sweeps personalities to begin to revert.
So you could have a Scourge mold repainted in a half dozen different colors as dead Decepticons regaining their individuality. I think that's more interesting than a straight Starscream repaint.
Actually, if I could propose one thing to the club, I think I'd lean for G2 versions of the '86 movie characters. There's a UK comic book recoloration of Rodimus for G2 in purple, orange, and silver (with a G2 logo) that's spiffy as a starting point. There are decent recent molds of Magnus, Cup, Springer, Wheelie, Scourge, and Cyclonus. Galvatron is getting a cool new figure in Titans Return. I'm guessing we'll see a new Rodimus in the next couple of lines.
It'd be entertaining to G2-ize 'em all. And if you make the sweeps rainbow and give them their G1 individual personalities back, that's a ton of repaint potential. I can think of few things more G2 than taking something uniform like Sweeps and making a ton of clashing neon versions.

Are you located in the US? I'm pretty sure he came with two chargers ... one European and one US one. If it didn't, then I just used a US adapter so that it would work. If you look at all of the images in the gallery, you'll find the ones where he is indeed working. Their speakers were playing whatever music was on the iPods, all Transformers related. I had a lot of fun with these galleries. My only regret is that it took me about 3 years to crop these photos and get them up on the site. They're done now for all to enjoy!

Just a question Ryan. I own the G1 colors of iPod Optimus. As you know, the entire surface is painted with a coat of glossy paint. Is it the same for the White version? On the paint coat I mean.
Always wanted to use the white version for UM but did nt bite 'cause I had no use for two speakers.
This guy btw (Optimus G1 colors) was being sold for a song a couple of years ago, less than the regular price of a Masterpiece car.

Encore Emergency Green Ratchet was released in 2008 as a Japanese mail away exclusive to those that purchased the Transformers Visualworks book. The green deco is an homage to the way Ratchet looked in the live action movies. ¹
Encore Protection Black Ironhide was also released in 2008 as an New Years Specail e-HOBBY redeco. The included bio states that the black coating was to help hide Ironhide from his enemies. There is a bit of a debate to whether this deco was an homage to the Diaclone toy or to the the way Ironhide appeared in the live action movies. ²
Encore Ratchet is a 2007 reissue in the TakaraTomy Encore line. These versions of the toy came with cardboard cut-outs of the robot head to help emulate the look of the original TV series. The weapons platform also has some retooled clips to help Ratchet stay connected. ¹
Encore Ironhide is a 2007 reissue in the TakaraTomy Encore line. Much like the 2007 Encore Ratchet, this version of Ironhide also comes with the cardboard robot head cut-outs and the weapons platform retooling. ²
Dark of the Moon Cannon Force Ironhide is a 2011 G1 inspired redeco of the Dark of the Moon Voyager Class Ironhide. ³

What are the differences between the vintage version and Encore you ask?
- Red Plastic is darker on Encore, lighter on G1
- White plastic is off white, whereas G1 version is brighter white
- Metal screws and rivets have gold tint on Encore instead of silver on G1
- Mouth gun is painted a dark magenta or purple color, which is red on G1
- Inside of mouth is painted red on Encore
- Eyes of Lynx mode are now painted light blue
- Gold chrome is lighter or a more subtle shade on Encore, darker on G1
- Stickered "windows" on left rear side of shuttle was corrected to have circle removed finally!
- Toybox stampings replaced with Tomy 2007 stampings
